Small Business Cyber Security Planning Guide (FCC.GOV)

Did you know that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a comprehensive small businesses cyber security guide?

It’s called the Cyber Security Planning Guide. It’s a tool for small businesses to create customized cyber security planning guides, designed specifically for businesses that lack the resources to hire dedicated staff to protect their business, information and customers from cyber threats.

How does it work?

FCC “Cyber Security Planning Guide” cover

Anyone can visit the FCC website and begin creating a customized “cyber security planning guide” for their business.

On the FCC site, visitors have the ability to add/remove sections to the guide according to their industry-specific regulatory constraints and/or technology requirements.

Based on the criteria selected, the site will generate a custom PDF guide document, which can be used as a template for implementing a comprehensive cyber security plan for your organization.

Developed by the FCC with input from public and private sector partners, including the Department of Homeland Security, the National Cyber Security Alliance and the United States Chamber of Commerce, the guide also features a helpful “Cyber Security Glossary” where users can learn common computer security terms, with everything from adware and anti-virus software to vishing, worms, and zombie computer (seriously, these are real terms used in cyber security).

Additionally, the guide doesn’t just outline essential Technical safeguards (such as anti-virus, firewalls, patching, etc), but also Procedures and Policies for a company’s users to follow – which is an absolutely critical component of any serious security plan.
